Epidural Anaesthesia

 EPIDURAL ANAESTHESIA

Cattle

  • Injection site - Sacrococcygeal space  
  • Sacrococcygeal space in located by moving the tail up and down and feeling for depression between the last sacrum and and first Coccygeal vertebra. 
  • Clipping and surgical preparation of the injection site. 
  • Placement of a needle 18G , of one and half  inch in size is used . The needle is inserted into the site at an angle of 450 . The hub of the needle should be angled slightly posteriorly. The correct placement of the needle is tested by gauging the ease with which the plunger can be compressed. 
  • Injection of the anesthetic solution should be done easily with minimal resistance 
  • Drug commonly used is 2% lignocaine

Epidural anaesthesia

Indications

  • To prevent defecation reflex during correction of dystocia
  • To prevent straining during correction of dystocia
  • To produce loss of sensation around the perineum

Dose

  • Posterior epidural block- 3-5 ml
  • In posterior epidural anaesthesia of the regions around the perineum,vulva and tail are obtained
  • Anterior epidural block 6-10 ml
  • In anterior epidural block anaesthesia of the regions up to the paralumbar fossa are obtained

Goat

  • Injection site -Sacrococcygeal space  
  • Drug commonly used is 2% lignocaine - 1-2 ml

Epidural anaesthesia in goats

Dog    

  • Injection site - Lumbo Sacral space
  • Drug commonly used is 2% lignocaine - 0.5 -1ml
