Diagnostic and Prescriptive Teaching Centers

Perhaps the newest plan in special education is the diagnostic and prescriptive teaching center. These centers are staffed with a team of special educators, often supported by ancillary personnel from the field of psychology and sometimes even from social work and medicine. For short periods of time usually about a month- the team works intensively with individual children who have learning problems. The goal is to develop a successful, specialized program of instruction for each pupil. Assembled at such centers are the most creative and clinically skilled special educators available. Often they must develop specialized instructional materials and programs needed by the child. In many ways these centers resemble the remedial reading and child study centers of the past.
