Writing Readiness

EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE AND DEVELOPMENT 3(2+1)
Lesson 04: Development of Language skills through ECE

Writing Readiness

Similar to reading, formal writing too should be introduced only at the primary stage, in grade1 when the child is ‘ready’ for it. Being ready means, the child should have:

  • Good muscular coordination of fingers, eyes and hand
  • Competency to differentiate between different shapes and forms

For the child to be maturationally ready to write, he must be given certain specific experiences in an ECE programme which will facilitate his muscle coordination. Initially the child must be given different creative activities like drawing, painting, clay modeling, cutting and pasting for collage etc. These should be given in addition to activities like threading beads, stringing leaves together, etc., which will promote his fine muscle control and eye coordination.

By the age of 4 ½ years, the child should be given more specific writing readiness activities like

  • Coloring in enclosed spaces
  • Joining dots
  • Tracing
  • Copying forms
  • Pattern making
