Lesson 25 : Court Actions in Relation to Adoption

Introduction

Depending upon the legislation in a particular state, jurisdiction over adoption may be vested in Juvenile courts, probate courts. or family courts within a district or circuit court system: most desirably these courts are in the county or district where the adopting parents live and also have jurisdiction over other family matters closely related to adoption guardianship cus­tody termination of parental rights, divorce, support, and paternity.

Adoption statutes vary considerably among the states in the safeguards that arc provided for children their biological parents and their adoptive parents. In its legislative guides to adoption the Children's Bureau has cited the following conditions as essential to the best In­terests of the child.
