  1. Shampoo Machines:
  2. The rotary brush shampoo method is the oldest and most widely used technique for carpet cleaning the machine. This action breaks the oil film on the fibers and releases the dirt particles trapped therein. Some procedures call for wet- vacuuming to remove dirt and water. In other procedures, the carpet is allowed to dry, after which the powdered detergent and dirt are vacuumed away. This method can be quite effective when employed by a skilled operator. Drying time can be 4 to 6 hours for a badly soiled carpet and 2 hours on a lightly soiled one. The cost for the machines runs from $400 to $800; tanks, brushes, and attachments are extra. Operators may become fatigued because the machines may weigh 100 pounds or more.

  3. Reel-brush shampoo machine:
  4. The reel-brush shampoo machinecan be used for dry foam or with a mist attachment that sprays detergent cleaner on the brushes and carpet. Carpet damage and wetting are kept at a minimum because the mist leaves so little moisture. Vacuuming before and after is necessary, but a conventional upright vacuum is effective because so little dampness remains

The dry powder technique traditionally has involved a solvent-saturated, absorbent powder that is worked into the carpet pile by hand or by a revolving-brush machine. It is allowed to dry for a period, generally several hours, and then the carpet is vacuumed. This does not distort color or texture, and carpet can be walked on immediately after vacuuming. The technique also can delay the need for a wet shampoo. It is not as effective, however, for cleaning a heavily soiled carpet.

  5. Smaller Machines
  6. Some of the machines designed for daily floor care, if used frequently and properly; will decrease the number of times that the previously described big machines and systems will have to be used.

  7. Carpet sweepers are almost ineffective on high-pile or multilevel carpets but easier for maids to carry and effective if guest rooms have level carpet.
  8. All-purpose sweepers are tiny, modular tools used most frequently for quick clean-ups on restaurant carpets. They can pick up sand, dirt, broken glass, and cigarettes.
  9. Electric brooms are another lightweight tool (6 pounds), satisfactory if made of metal but a burden if made of an easily breakable plastic. These can get into small places and under beds.
  10. Vacuum Cleaner: vacuum cleaner range from 8 to 11 pounds, and\jr1ost models today have enough power to make it worthwhile to carry around the space. These come with or without attachments.
  11. Lightweight tank vacuum cleaner have sufficient power for maids to use in guest rooms and are small enough to fit on carts, but these are more important as cleaning tools for upholstery, draperies, lampshades, and vents than for heavy-duty floor care.
  12. On-the-back vacuum cleaner-called piggy-backs, backpacks, or papooses-are light and easy to carry into inaccessible areas.
  13. Heavy upright vacuum cleaners are the famous beats as-it-sweeps-as-it-cleans machines. These usually have two motors: one to drive the brush and one to furnish suction. There are now so many heavy-duty vacuums made for institutional cleaning that to enumerate their advantages and disadvantages would be a major project. They range from wet-dry pick-ups to heavy giants that will inhale crumpled papers, cigarette packages, and mice
  14. Commercial tank-type vacuum cleaner most often are the wet-dry pick-up types because the tanks can accommodate more of the water that has been extracted from the carpet than the upright types. There is even a top unit that fits over a bucket or a large drum so that, in an emergency, maintenance personnel can quickly carry the portable unit to an area if the regular large wet-vac is in use elsewhere.

The vacuums described should be used in daily maintenance programs, usually before the shampoo machines do their regular work. Just how often to vacuum and shampoo is strictly depends on the factors discuss earlier.

Whatever tools, machines, or methods are used, there are certain maintenance situations about which the professional housekeeper should be aware with regard to carpet and they are as follows.

Spot cleaning. As soon as spills occur, they should be cleaned up. If spotting cannot be done as soon as a spill is made, it should be attended to before daily vacuuming or dry foam shampooing. Early blotting of liquid spills with a soft, absorbent paper towel or cloth reduces the chances that a spot will become permanent.

Carpets and rugs are widely used for any residential interiors for their protective and aesthetic advantages. They are not an ideal choice where there is likely to be certain amount of splashing and appalling of water but they highly preferred for high and traffic areas like commercial places, offices and public institution.
