Post Independence Period

  • The Post-Independence development of floriculture and landscape gardening in India is characterized with the creation of several public parks and gardens of the informal style in cities for amelioration of environment.
  • Mass planting of trees, both in urban and rural areas were taken up
  • Conservation and protection of important national flora and establishment of national parks and plants sanctuaries were given importance.
  • Apart from these many improved cultivars and agro techniques of roses, gladiolus, chrysanthemum, jasmine, bougainvillea and other flowers were developed after Independence.
  • During 1960-61 the government of India had invited a Japanese garden expert, Mr. K. Mori to advice on creation of Japanese gardens in India. Roshanara Garden,and Buddha Jayanti Park at New Delhi were the Japanese gardens developed after Independence.
