Buttons are also another type of closure. Used in fashion design and clothing, buttons are those small disc-shaped objects that are usually attached to a part of a clothing to secure an opening. Buttons are manufactured in a broad variety of materials that include natural materials like wood, vegetable ivory, shells, bones, or horns. Some buttons are also made from synthetic materials such as plastic, metal, glass or celluloid.

A garment may have a concealed or an emphasized opening depending on the buttons used. Though made in many shapes and materials, buttons are basically of two types: Shank and sew through.
The shank buttons has a solid top, with a shank beneath to accommodate thicker fabrics and keep the button from pressing too hard against the button hole.
Sew-through buttons (4 hole and 2 hole)

The sew-through button has either two or four holes through which the button is sewn on. A thread shank can be added.
