Lesson 33 : Computer as a Design Tool

Textile Designing Software

The software packages for computer aided textile designing depends on various applications in the textile sectors.

1. Woven / Dobby designs
   The package for woven design application is for the end products - suitings, shirtings, shawls, blankets, furnishings and others, which are mainly manufactured on handlooms, powerlooms, shuttleless looms, on two shafts to 24 shafts. The package provides the following modules:
1. Yarn formation
   The yarn can be defined in term of fibre, count, single or grindled, twist per inch, type of twist S or Z, individual colours involved and cost per kg. of yam. There is always the facility to change any of the parameters mentioned above and visualize the effect on the screen of the colour monitor.
2. Pattern formation
   Various weave patterns can be prepared on the graph paper. These Patterns may be for a basic any time while designing modified or special Patterns. This can be stored as a library and can be re – called any time while designing the fabric.
3. Design / Fabric formation
   In the fabric formation, a design can be produced by re- calling the Patten's from the library and defining the repeat of weave in warp and weft and further defining the arrangement of colours for ends & picks in warp and weft. The fabric can be visualized on the colour monitor as front side and also as the backside there is always a zooming facility so as to visualize the fabric in the magnified form.


2. Printing Designs
   The printing package provides the facilities
• Creation of motifs
• The basic motifs can be rotated, translated, scaled, copied as per the designers choice to form the main design for printing.
• Preparation of colour palette as per the various combination of colours
• Once the designer is satisfied with the design motif, colour combination, it can be copied on a colour printer to see the total colour and design effect on paper.
• Colour separation
• Analysis of design for printing


3. Jacquard design
   The package gives the following modules:
• Creation of design just like in Printing design method.
• The design is converted into graphical representation depending on the type of jacquard. The weaves are selected from the library for each part of the and then the Punching instruction's ea' be printed


4. Carpet Designs
   Computer System can be utilized for carpet designing in the following steps
1. Create the design
2. Selection of repeat
3. Defining the size of the carpet
4. Define the knottage of the carpet
5. Visualizing the carpet on colour monitor
6. Save the Motifs and design in the file.
7. Printing


5. Knitting Designs
   Preparing a knitwear design on Computer Controlled Knitting Designing comprises of:
• Creation of set up rib in graph mode
• Selection of rib structure design
• Colour codes for body structure
• Creation pattern library


6. Embroidery Designs
   The package for embroidery incorporates the creation of the design and then running of the embroidery machine with different colour combinations and stitches, depending on the machinery involved and the stitches possible. The instructions are being given and simultaneously 10-15 machines can be operated for the creation of the same design.
