Lesson 13 : Other Printing Methods

Blotch Printing

Blotch Prints are prints in which both the background and the motif have been printed onto the white fabric.

  • Any one of the several methods of application such as block, roller (or) Screen may be used
  • It is a special variety of direct Print.

Method:

  • A blotch print is one in which the background colour has been obtained by printing but not piece dyeing.
  • It is a special variety of direct Print.
  • The ground and the pattern design colours are Printed onto a white cloth, in one printing operation.
  • The background may be a light (or) a dark shade, usually there is an obvious difference in the intensity of the background colour between the face and the back of the fabric.
  • The dye may be forced through the fabric, if the fabric is thin, lessening this difference in colour intensity.
  • Blotch prints are direct prints.
  • Sometimes blotch prints are designed to imitate more costly discharge (or) resist Print effects.
  • One of the problem with blotch prints is that sometimes the large background colour areas of the print are not covered with the full depth of colour.
  • The overall appearance can almost be a washed-out look rather than a full, rich cover.
  • Another problem with blotch prints is that minute uncolored areas sometimes appear between the sections of background colour and the resist motif.
  • Blotch-Printed fabrics coloured with pigments rather than dye may have an objectionable stiff hand.
