Lesson 14 : Other Printing Methods

Photo Printing

Photo printing on fabric is very similar to producing photographs. Either black and white or multicoloured pattern can be reproduced.

Method:

In photo printing, the fabric is first coated with a light sensitive chemical. Any photographs can be printed on to the fabric. The results are same as when printing photographs on paper.

After treating with a light reactive chemical, a negative is placed on the fabric and light is transmitted through it to develop the design. After the design has stabilized or developed to the shade desired, the fabric is thoroughly washed and the print becomes as permanent as any good photographs.

A sophisticated form of photo printing is the cyamatic process developed by Dr. Hans Jenny.

Characteristics:

  • The results are similar to that obtained by printing on photo sensitive paper for photo copies.
  • Each and every details can be reproduced if the technicians are skilful
  • Any photograph can be printed on the fabric.

Merits and Demerits:

Merits:

  • High rate of productivity
  • Wide variety of designs which can be handled by this method.
  • The accuracy with which each position of an elaborate design may be fitted in to a perfect whole.

Demerits:

  • The circumference of the roller limits the size of the design.
