Rules to remember while embroidering

Lesson 32: Hand Embroidery

Rules to remember while embroidering

  1. It is better to wash hands before starting to stitch to keep the fabric and threads clean.
  2. It is essential to cut all trailing threads immediately otherwise they will work their way into the next stitch.
  3. To undo the stitches it is better to use pointed scissors rather than a seam ripper.
  4. Stitches will be smoother if there are no twists in the thread, so it is better to remove the twist periodically while embroidering.
  5. A rusty needle can leave a mark, so use a clean needle.
  6. Threads which have been undone lose their shine and should not be re-used.
  7. Never use a knot to secure threads. A back stitch is always better to secure threads. This will help the work to lie flat when finished.

Care of embroidered fabrics

  1. To wash embroidered fabrics use only mild soap and water, making sure they are rinsed thoroughly, until the water is completely clear.
  2. Do not wring out the wet fabric, instead roll it in a clean towel to remove excess moisture and let it dry naturally.
