Music is an important tool in the hands of a sound designer. In video/television, music helps to draw the attention of the viewer to the scene through emphasis. Music is used in the background to emphasize or intensify action, set pace, unify transition, indicate time, or evoke a mood. Foreground music is diegetic, such as someone playing an instrument or miming to a playback.
Certain kinds of music evoke similar responses universally-feelings of disgust, love, hurt, sadness, joy, or even restlessness. It is the choice of the music instrument, the rhythm, and the tempo that create the desired effect. The signature tune of a newscast is totally different form that of a soap opera. The instruments and the tempo of music used in newscasts, game shows, and contests are totally different from those used in melodrama and romantic episodes.
