Lesson 03: Understanding The Components Of Sound

loudness

The loudness of a sound depends on the intensity of the sound stimulus. A bomb explosion is louder than the bursting of a tetra-pack because the bomb explosion displaces more number of molecules than the tetra-pack burst. It must be remembered that loudness is relative. What can be very loud in a closed room need not even be heard in the open. Try bursting a tetra-pack in a small room. It will sound loud to your ears. Do the same in an open field next to a road. You might not even hear it. The pitch of a sound must not be confused with its loudness. For example, we can talk in low volumes but in a very high pitch.
