Feedback in communication

Lesson 14 : Feedback in Communication

Feedback in communication

Feedback is the reaction given by the receivers in response to stimulus, i.e. message. It is also called the return process. The response or feedback may be vocal or it may be a smile, a yawn, or a wild gesture, each type of response gives the sender an idea of how effectively he has communicated. It also helps in enhancing the rate of adoption, because free feedback promotes understanding, acceptance and retention of knowledge by removing errors in transmitting and mental barrier.

Feedback plays a very important part in communication because it tells us how our message is being interpreted. It is essential that sender must always be careful about the feedback. If he receives no feedback, it means no communication has taken place. Communication efforts often fail, because it stops simply with laying facts before the people.

The job of an extension worker does not finish by merely communicating the idea, rather his actual job begins after that. He has to continue his efforts to promote an understanding of facts resulting in the acceptance and adoption of the message. Effective free feedback is of much help in these efforts of the extension worker.

It has also been observed that with every increase in the amount of feedback there was consistently a corresponding increase in confidence among the respondents in their knowledge gain. The gain in confidence is the function of differential feedback in the communication process.
