Internet Protocol Television (IPTV)

IPTV launched only in some cities around 2006-2007 by Mtnl/Bsnl later Expands to many urban areas and still expanding. Private Broadband provider Bharti Airtel also starts its IPTV service in Delhi, NCR region.

In India also, there is a fairly substantial service charge for cable 'IV. In the metros it varies from 150 to 200 rupees a month; and in certain suburban areas, the charge will be even higher.

Today's cable giants of the world are TNT (tuner network television) and ESPN (Entertainment and sports programming network). Time Incorporated which owns the HBO (Home Box Office) is now telecasting programmes to cable companies via an 'RCA satellite. Nearly 300 cable companies are buying HBO's programmes.

In the ordinary TV system, the telecasting spectrum has limitations. But the co-axial cable has no spectrum limitations. When telecasting takes place, the quality and power of the signals are enhanced by the cable. The cable also gives two-way communication facility and hence big merchants, media corporations and other businesses can establish direct contacts with customers using cable connections.

The two-way cable system is helpful not only for reaching ordinary subscribers with entertainment programmes but special groups such as student researchers and others with facilities to get replies for their inquiries.
