Lesson 5:Training objectives

Meaning and definition

Defining objectives for training is a critical step in the whole development process. Without training objective, the trainer doesn't know exactly what is to be taught, learners don't know what they are to learn and managers don't know what they are investing their training funds in.

A training objective defines what is to be learned, how well it is to be performed, and under what conditions it is to be performed. The objectives must be clear, honest, complete and unquestionably correct.

It is the specific knowledge, skills or attitudes that the trainees are to gain as a result of the training activity. An objective is usually measurable.

By defining objectives in a measurable way, a desired behaviour is described and will later be able to offer better feedback. However attitudinal goals are often not very measurable.

To adequately equip trainees for a certain task, they need the knowledge required to do the task. Knowledge alone, however, is insufficient. Trainees must also learn the appropriate skills and attitudes needed to perform the task well.

"A training objective must clearly state the task to be done, the conditions under which training will take place and the standards of learning that should be accomplished."

Training objectives are the direction of a training programme. They are to be formulated properly before conducting a training programme; otherwise the quality of the programme may be poor. They are to be formulated either to improve the knowledge of the trainees or to develop skills or change the attitude among them. If the training programme is of sufficient duration, the programme objectives may include all the three aspects viz. improvement in knowledge, development of skills and change in the attitude.
