Glossary of gender

Gender can also be referred to as socially constructed roles and responsibilities assigned to men and women in a given culture or location and the societal structure that supports them. Gender is learned and changes over time.

  1. Gender bias- the tendency to make decisions or take actions based on gender
  2. Gender mainstreaming- the process of ensuring equal access and control over resources equally be men and Women
  3. Gender blind- a failure to recognise gender as an essential determinant of social outcomes influencing the projects and policies
  4. Gender awareness- an understanding that there are socially determined differences between men and women, based on learned behaviour which affect their ability to access and control resources.
  5. Gender sensitivity- ability to acknowledge and highlight the existing gender difference
  6. Gender discrimination- prejudicial treatment of an individual based on gender
  7. Gender equality- result of absence of discrimination
  8. Gender equity- condition where women and men participate as equals
  9. Gender roles -learned of what roles are male and what roles are female
  10. Gender empowerment- the process of generating and building capacitiesto execise control over one's life.
  11. Gender planning- the process of planning developmental programmes and projects that are gender sensitive
