Lesson 29 : Gender Sensitization

Gender Sensitive Planning Therefore Aims To

  • Promote meaningful “partnership in development” and emphasize gender rather then women-specific concerns i.e. recognize that women do not operate in isolation in society but together with the men.
  • Take into account the gender and social dynamics and other social stratification systems (e.g., by ethnic group, income level, age, religion etc.) that operate in particular societies.
  • Make women visible like men both as active participants and beneficiaries of the programmes/projects.
  • Ensure opportunities and treatment for women equal to those for men.
  • Coherently support women in their inseparable roles in production, reproduction and community management.
  • Address both PGN and SGN. Ensure that those who are in especially vulnerable or marginalized situations are given additional consideration.
  • Emphasize efficiency and sustainability so that efforts do not lead to further marginalization of women in the economy and especially so that the grassroots women will be able to continue their efforts to help themselves in the longer term without external assistance.
  • Help women to mobilize and organize themselves, so that they can form their own group structures (institution building). In organizing activities, ensure that women beneficiaries and or direct recipients are able to participate equally with men;
  • Consider the timing, location and duration of activities. Due to women’s double workload (household responsibilities and other duties) they generally have less free time than men and cannot be absent from the household for long periods;
  • If women cannot (freely) speak in mixed groups, organize separate meetings or training for them and arrange for women staff to communicate with them;
  • Organize physical arrangements (duration of training, travel arrangements, accommodation and sanitary facilities) in such a way that women beneficiaries can (get permission to) participate;
  • Given that women beneficiaries and/or direct recipients are often responsible for young children, arrange for child care facilities at the training venue;
  • Seize any opportunity to demonstrate that the integration of women in development activities is not a zero sum game and that men, families and communities can benefit include Sensitization/Awareness Raising/Advocacy) activities.
