3.1.10.2 On-Line Mode

In this mode, the computer executes the programme instructions as and when the data is entered into the system. This requires two things:

· the programme that is used to process the data should reside in the internal memory continuously, and

· the computer system should be on-line.

This mode of operation is suitable for applications, such as inventory control, airline reservations, banking sys tems and the like, where the transactions are to be processed as soon as they occur. Such systems are also referred to as on-line, real-time systems .
