Identification of sharks families

Visit nearby fish landing centre or a fish market.

Collect sharks based on the following characters.

  • Body cylindrical, elongated, or moderately depressed
  • Lateral gill openings (or gill slits)
  • 5 gill openings on each side of the head, rarely 6or 7
  • Pectoral fins not fused to the sides of the head over the gill openings
  • Mouth is usually ventral on the head,
  • Placoid scales present
  • Identify the families based on the characters described below.
  • Draw a neat diagram.
