Pre-stocking pond management
Pre-stocking pond management
● It consists of removal of undesirable aquatic weeds by mechanical or chemical or manual means
● Remove unwanted animals like predatory and weed fishes by the application of mahua oil cake ( 2000-2500 kg/ha) or bleaching powder (375 kg/ha).
● Apply lime (CaO or CaCO3 or Ca(OH)2) at 200-400 kg/ha to improve the pond productivity and maintain pH.
● Five-six days prior to stocking spawn, apply manure either cow dung at 10-20 tons or poultry manure at 5-10 tons/ha to produce natural fish food organisms in the pond.
● Eradicate predatory aquatic insects from the nursery pond by repeated dragging the pond with a fine-meshed fry net
● To ensure better survival of carp spawn, it is important to effectively clear the pond of its insect population, prior to stocking.
● For effective control of insects, spray a chemical insecticide like diesel or kerosene on the surface of pond.
● Alternatively, apply an emulsion of soap and oil in the ratio of 18 : 56 kg/ha for more effective control of insects.
● Of late, butox (a veterinary drug used to heal wounds on animals) is being commonly used at 2-4 ml/100 m2 area of the pond.
