Unit 14 - Digestive enzyme, digestibility and factors affecting digestibility

14.6.Microbial digestion

Microbial digestion plays an important role in cellulose digestion and protein synthesis, particularly cellulase being produced by the bacteria harboured in the gut. Generally bacteria are abundant in the gut of detrital and macrophyte feeders and also exhibit considerable proteolytic and amylolytic activity. In addition microbial flora is also known to exhibit chitinase and lecithinase activity.
