Procedure

Procedure

  • Make students into various groups based on the class strength of the students
  • Visit a fish landing centre based at a river / reservoir / lake / flood plain wetland
  • Collect details about the number of boats ventured into river / reservoir / lake / flood plain wetland for fishing on the day of visit, the type of fishing gears used, mesh size of each gear, type and size of boat, average number of fishermen in each boat
  • Select 10 % of boats at random for each type of gear being operated
  • Identify all the fish species caught by the boats selected
  • Take 50 specimens randomly for each species representing various sizes
  • Measure the total length / fork length of the specimens selected nearest to 1mm using a measuring board or ruler
  • Measure the weight of the specimens selected nearest to 1 gm using a balance
  • Assess the total weight of each species approximately, caught by the boats selected and project for the whole landing centre based on the number of boats sampled and total number of boats went for fishing
  • Pool all the data collected by various groups together and arrive at the followings
  • Calculate the percentage contribution of each species caught by each type of gear
  • Calculate the percentage contribution of each gear
  • Draw pie charts to show gear-wise and species-wise catch composition
