3.1.2. Criteria to locate a good coastal farm site

1. Average air temperature of 260 C for tropical fish and crustaceans
2. Average pond temperature of 300 C.
3. Salinity of 10 to 35 parts per thousand (1.0 to 3.5%) - optimum would depend on the species selected for culture.
4. Brackish/seawater of good quality and high natural productivity- optimum water quality will depend on the species to be cultured.
5. Away from all sources of pollution (urban, agricultural and industrial).
6. Availability of seed for stocking
7. Land of suitable elevation to enable easy drainage of water from the ponds
8. Clay or clayey loam soil
9. Soil with relatively higher pH (>6.0)
10. Good electricity connection and supply
11. Good availability of labour
12. Road and transportation
13. Availability of communication
14. Availability of supplies
15. Proximity to markets
16. Low flood risk
