4.1. Water and soil quality management
Fish production is influence by hydro-biological characteristics. Fish culture also has a pronounced reverse effect on the environment. For example fish consume oxygen and produce metabolic byproducts such as ammonia and carbon dioxide, which react with already present constituents of the environment to drive an ever-changing chain of reactions to produce a chemical environment in which fish must live. The most important water quality parameters which affect fish in culture environments are discussed in this chapter.

Water quality standards for aquaculture are presented in the following table. They are meant to be used as guide only, since certain parameters can vary significantly from one species to another.
