Visit to Marine Products Export Development Authority

The Marine Products Export Development Authority(MPEDA) which is functioning under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India was established in the year 1972 to augment the country’s fisheries production and promote export of seafood. The MPEDA undertakes several extension and promotional services to increase the production of export-oriented fishery products like shrimps, freshwater prawns, sea bass and ornamental fishes. Besides undertaking extension services to promote aquaculture, they also take up extension services to promote post harvest technology aspects like hygienic handling of fishes to ensure better quality raw material for the production of processed sea food.

The extension services of MPEDA include providing advisory services, organizing training programmes, conducting exhibitions, seminars, conferences and campaigns bringing out extension publications and providing subsidies to promote various fisheries activities. They have a unit by name ‘Net Fish’ that takes care of providing training to various categories of people.

During their visit to the MPEDA, the students are expected to learn about the various extension services undertaken by the MPEDA, their transfer of technology strategies and assessment of training needs for conducting training programmes.
