Field studies on village institutions and their role in the village development

An institution is an organized system of social relationships which embodies certain common values and procedures and meets certain basic needs of societies. Each institution is a structure of related roles which embodies common values in a society.

There are five basic institutions in both rural and urban society. They are 1.Family 2. Religion, 3. Economic institutions 4. Government and 5. Education.

Now, with democratic set up, a few more institutions namely the panchayat, the co-operative society, school, Mahila mandals and youth clubs also prevail. They play an article role in the development of the community. In this exercise, the students may be asked to collect information on the important institutions and organizations and their functions in the village for promoting community development. The required data for this study may be collected from key-informants in the village by developing an appropriate interview schedule. A model interview schedule is given below.
