Preparation of biofilter

Preparation of biofilter

Aim

To fabricate a biofilter.

Materials required

A container

False bottom plate

Mosquito net

PVC pipe (L shaped)

Air tubes ā€“ 2 in numbers

Air stone

Aerator

Media ā€“ Sand, gravel, corals, charcoal, etc.

Procedure

A container which can hold a capacity of 50L is better to construct a biofilter. Two air tubes are passed through a PVC pipe which is having ā€˜Lā€™ shape. This PVC pipe is passed through the centre of the false bottom plate inverting the false bottom plate.

An inverted false bottom plate with an L shaped PVC pipe is passed with two air tubes. One air tube is connected with an air stone inside the false bottom plate and the another end of the same tube is connected with aerator, the false bottom should be covered with mosquito net.

The stones or pebbles have a size of 3-5 cm is filled above the false bottom plate for a thickness of 10cm. Above which sand is filled for the thickness of 5 cm. Then, charcoal is filled upto a thickness of 2.5cm and above which corals are filled for a thickness of 2.5cm.

An air tube is inserted from the aquarium to the filter tank to drain the impure water. The pure water after filtering will be brought by the tube which is kept inside the tube. The aerator helps to lift the water from the tank.
