Preparation of Infusoria

AIM

To prepare a culture of infusoria.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

Containers,raw materials (potato,carrot and cabbage),mosquito net

PROCEDURE

Thoroughly clean the container and keep it in a cool place where natural light is available.

Fill the container with 40L of fresh water preferably pond water.

Immerse any one of the hand full of raw material (potato, carrot, cabbage or straw)

Cover the container with mosquito net cloth to avoid flies and mosquites.

Leave the container undisturbed for 2 - 3 days

The water terms milky and emit foul smell in 2-3 days.

A film of slim will form on the water surface.

In about 4 - 5 days water turns clear and become transparent with a light yellow colour, which is because of floating spores of infusoria that have settled on water.
