Reactions of reducing disaccharides

EXERCISE-7: REACTIONS OF DISACCHARIDES - REDUCING

There are two types of disaccharides, viz., Reducing and Non-reducing.

Lactose and Maltose

  • Perform the following tests with 1% Lactose / Maltose solution.
    • Molisch’s test
    • Fehling’s test
    • Benedict’s test
    • Barfoed’s test
    • Osazone test
  • Barfoed’s test will not produce an immediate red precipitate of cuprous oxide with lactose / maltose. However, a red precipitate may be obtained on prolonged heating for about 20 minutes.
