Bacteria

BACTERIA

  • Bacteria are very small. They have a diameter of 0.5 – 1 um. Due to this small size the surface area /volume ratio is very high compared to that of large organisms of similar shape.
  • The large surface area compared to a small volume facilitates easy nourishment of all areas of the cell. So there is no circulatory mechanism to distribute the nutrients. There is little or no cytoplasmic movement with in the cell.
