Practical application of haemagglutination

PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF HAEMAGGLUTINATION

  • Used as spot test for detecting haemagglutinating viruses.  This can be done by mixing two or three drops of suspected sample (infected chick embryo fluids or cell culture fluids) with equal quantity of 5% chicken red cells in normal saline. The appearance of the clumps of agglutinated red cells, indicate the presence of a haemagglutinating virus in the sample.
  • Titration of the virus suspension  using the haemagglutinating property.
