Milking rate

MILKING RATE

  • The speed with which a cow is milked is of economic importance in dairy farm operations. The greater the milk production the faster the milk flows from the udder per unit of milking time.
  • Milking rate depends in part on dilability of teat orifice and teat length. This inherited characteristic is related to susceptibility to infection. The whole milking operation requires to be completed within 6-7 minutes.
  • A cow will give more milk when milked rapidly than when milked slowly.
  • There is difference of 10 and 30 per cent in milk yield and butter fat content respectively of cow milked by fast expert milker and slow novice milker.
