TYPES OF SKULLS IN DOGS

Cephalic Index

  • The different breeds of dogs display great variations in the form and size of the skull
  • Those which have long and narrow skulls are designated as Dolicocephalic eg: Grey hound, Colic, Doberman
  • Dogs having broad and short skulls are termed as Brachycephalic eg. Bull dog, pug
  • Intermediate forms are Mesaticephalic eg. Fox terrier, Dachshund
  • It is the relation of the breadth of the skull to its length assuming the latter equals 100

                   Length
  • The length of skull is measured from the nuchal crest to the rostral end of the inter-incisive suture and the breadth between the summits of the zygomatic arches
  • The Cephalic index of extreme
    • Dolicocephalic breeds: 50
    • Brachycephalic specimens: 90
    • Mesaticephalic specimens: 70
