EXPECTORANTS

  • Expectorants increase the fluidity and volume of respiratory secretions, and in the early stages of inflammation relieves pain and tends to reduce slightly the incidence of coughing.
  • The contribution of expectorants to therapeutic success is slight and their main role today is as components of compound cough remedies for oral administration.
  • Expectorants are classified as inhalant expectorants, ingested expectorants and mucolytic expectorants.
