Decongestants

DECONGESTANTS

  • Two major categories of drugs used as decongestants are the H1 antagonists and sympathomimetic drugs like ephedrine, pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine.
  • The alpha adrenoceptor agonists cause shrinkage of the swollen mucosa of the nasal tract in allergic or viral rhinitis
  • Examples are oxymetazoline, xylometazoline etc.
