Compounding and dispensing of Iodine ointment

COMPOUNDING AND DISPENSING OF IODINE OINTMENT

Aim

  • To prepare and dispense 25 g of iodine ointment

Composition

  • Iodine (crystals) - 1 g
  • Potassium iodide - 1 g
  • Glycerine - 3 ml
  • White soft paraffin - 20 g

Procedure

  • Potassium iodide and iodine are weighed and ground in a mortar. Glycerine is measured in a measuring cylinder and added with continuous mixing. Then the vehicle, white soft paraffin is added and continuously mixed till a homogenous uniformly coloured ointment is obtained. It is packed in butter paper and wrapped with the outer cover duly labeled and dispensed.
