The Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act

• The objective of the Act is to prevent and control of water pollution and to maintain or restore wholesome of water. Central and State Governments have constituted Boards for the Act. The Boards composition, terms and conditions of services of members are defined in Section. 3-12. In some States air and water boards are joint boards. The Boards advises the government on any matter concerning the prevention and control of water pollution.
  


• It is coordinating the activities and providing technical assistance and guidance. It runs national and state programmes through a mass media. It is collecting, compiling and publishing technical and statistical data, lay down the standard of different constituents of water, management of sewage and trade effluents and giving direction to any pollution units, industry, or person to stop such activity.


• The Government have power to restrict any unit, and to take samples of effluents and to get them analysed in Central or State laboratories. Whoever fails to comply with any provision of this Act is punishable with the imprisonment or with fine or with both. Second or third time breaking of the law is further punishable. Under the provision of this Act Central Pollution Control Board was established to fulfill its object.
