Pre-operative medical management

PRE-OPERATIVE MEDICAL MANAGEMENT

  • Fluid and electrolyte deficits should be corrected. Whole blood transfusion in severe blood loss is needed.
  • Perioperative antibiotic therapy can be given.
  • Cardiac status to be monitored.

Anaesthesia

  • Patients to be given oxygen before, intra and after anaesthesia. Anticholinergics can be given in bradycardia.
  • Barbiturates to be avoided as it cause splenic congestion. Acepromazine to be avoided as it causes hypotension.
  • Propofol can be given safely.

Preoperative preparation

  • Approach is paramedian in xiphoid area. Area to be prepared for aseptic surgery.
