LIGATION OF STENSON’S DUCT

Ligation of stensons duct

Indications

  • To treat the chronic salivary fistula
  • To bring about the atrophy of the gland
  • For experimental purpose

Anaesthesia & control

  • Local infiltration in standing or recumbent position

Technique

  • Anterior site
    • Make an ½ 1 inch skin incision along the course of the duct.
    • Locate the anterior border of the masseter muscle.
    • Pickout the duct carefully by its pink colour by a tenaculum or closed artery forceps underneath it.
    • Apply a silk ligature.
  • Posterior site
    • Extend the neck well.
    • Make an incision at the level of the duct, just behind the posterior border of the vertical ramus of the lower jaw and at the level of the tendon of the sterno-maxillaris.
    • Locate the duct and apply a silk suture
    • Suture the skin with interrupted apposition sutures.
