SIGNS DURING ESTRUS

  • The estrus period is characterized by sexual receptivity in the bitch. These behavioral changes occurs in response to a decline in circulating estrogen level and an increase in circulating progesterone concentration.
  • Estrus period begins on the first day that the female will stand for mounting and ends when the female no longer accepts the male.
  • The behavioral changes in the female include allowing or even initiating interaction with the male, crouching and elevating the rear quarter to wards the male when he approaches or attempt to mount, deviating the tail to one side, and tensing of the rear legs to support the weight of the male during mating.
  • The vaginal discharge that is seen during estrus usually has progressed to a straw-colored or only slightly pink colour.
  • The vaginal secretions contains pheromones, which attract the male dogs.
  • The average duration of estrus is about 5 to 9 days but this stage can last from just a few days to almost 3 weeks.
