Principle

PRINCIPLE

  • The color of blood is the function of oxygen saturation, the color change with oxygen saturation is due to the optical properties of the hemoglobin molecule and more, specifically the heme component, as the blood deoxygenates, it becomes increasingly less permeable to red light. The tissue then losses its pink appearance and takes a blue tint , an oximeter only needs to measure the blueness of the arterial blood, venous blood and any other major absorbents of light between the two halves of the sensor and to display value in terms of saturation
  • The presence of light emitting diodes (LED) of given wavelength at one end and a photo-detector at the other end helps to measure the wavelength of light during exposure. It is the sensor that converts the light intensity into electrical current
  • The difference in the intensity of the transmitted light between the LED is caused by the difference in the oxygen contained within vascular bundle and the relative amount of light that is transmitted to the photo-detector forms the basis for the pulse oximeter, to compose the arterial hemoglobin saturation.
