  • A toxic substance is one which can produce adverse or harmful effects in biological systems by interfering with their structure and function , leading to mortality. The quantity of a toxicant in an organism represents its balance between intake, conversion and excretion. The persistence of toxic residues in the soil and their transport to environment are the major factors which influence the accumulation of toxicants in the aquatic ecosystem .
