(f) Determination of carbohydrate

Practical 1-Proximate composition analysis of feed ingredients and prepared feeds

(f) Determination of carbohydrate

Carbohydrate content of the feed can be established based on nitrogen free extract (NFE) of the feed. This can be derived by the difference method. NFE refers to carbohydrates, sugars, starches, and a major portion of the hemicellulose in feeds and calculated when crude protein, fat, moisture, ash, and the fiber are added and the derived sum is subtracted from 100.

Calculation

NFE = 100 – (% moisture + % crude protein + % crude fat + % crude fibre + % ash)
