8.2.2.2.Oxidative Deamination

The α -amino groups of most amino acids ultimately are transferred to α -ketoglutarate by transamination, forming L-glutamate. Release of this nitrogen as ammonia is then catalyzed by L- glutamate dehydrogenase that uses either NAD + or NADP + as oxidant.

L- glutamate dehydrogenase

Glutamate + NAD(P)+ ↔ α -ketoglutamate + NAD (P) H + H+ + HN3
