Depth

Depth

Coral reefs are also limited by depth. They do not develop in water that is deeper than about 50-70m. Most reefs grow in depths of 25m or less. This is evidenced by the fact that these structures are restricted to the margin of continents or islands. The reason for the depth restriction has to do with the light requirement of zooxanthellae , living together with hermatypic corals.
