11.4.1.Tamil Nadu Coast
In this state, Cauvery, the major river has two important tributaries namely, Vellar and Coleroon with extensive fringed mangrove systems. Other important rivers are Palar, Cheyyar, Amarbati, Pennar and Thamra Parni. The coastal belt is predominantly occupied by aquaculture farms and sea food processing industries. Other industries like fertilizer, petro and agrochemicals are mainly located at Chennai, Ennore, Cadalore and Ottapibaram. In addition, the oil transport activity at Chennai, and Thoothukkudy is also posing threats to the coastal water quality.

Pondicherry Coast
Along the coast, only four large and medium industries are located of which, a distillery and paper mill contributes substantially to the total contaminant load in the coastal waters.
