13.5.Residence in the Coastal Zone
The majority of the population in worldwide lives on the coasts. The number and location of humans living in the coastal zone have profound effects upon marine and coastal ecosystems. Problems range from sewage and waste disposal to the clearance of mangrove and littoral forest for human habitation. There is also increased pressure on local fisheries and wild life resources, increased erosion and siltation of coastal habitats and increased susceptibility to floods, storms, and sea level rise.
