Bacterial canker

    Causal organism: Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae vanHall.
    SYMPTOMS
    • The disease attacks trunk, limbs, shoots, fruit spurs, blossoms, dormant buds, leaves and fruits.
    • The bark and outer sap wood show circular to elongated, water –soaked lesions.
    • Bark becomes brown and gummy.
    • The girdled branches die.
    • Blossom blight occurs and purple lesions appear on leaves.

    Source of inoculum

    • Primary source of inoculum: Infected plant part
    • Secondary source of inoculum: Air borne bacterial cell.

    MANAGEMENT
    • Cut and burn the infected plant part.
    • Aerial spray of streptocycline (0.5g/ litre) is effective.
    • Resistant varieties like -Barbank, Black champa, Elephant Heart & Maripo should be cultivated
