Lesson 4 & 5 : Intervention Efforts for Children With Developmental Challenges

Combination of Regular and Special Day schools

This type of facility the typical children of the immediate neighborhood within the given grade limits for the school, plus the exceptional children of a larger geographical area.

For Ex: Consultants, special tutors resource rooms and self contained special classes may be found in such schools. The degree of integration of exceptional children into general education varies from school to school. However, since exceptional children usually receive part of their academic instruction in the regular grades, this plan could be viewed as more integrated than the self contained special day class plan discussed above.

A major problem in these facilities is to prevent “the tail from wagging the dog”. The education of the other children may be disrupted by the abnormally high concentration of children with learning difficulties in the school. Another problem is to develop a staff of regular teachers with the interest and qualifications to serve average pupils and a large number of exceptional pupils as well.
